Web design for Lansing businesses

State workers, MSU students and suburban families all search for Lansing businesses differently. I build websites that answer each of them.

What you get

What a new website should do for your business

Your site won’t be my first. Since 2016 I’ve delivered 154 Upwork jobs for more than 100 clients, and 94 of them were WordPress and Divi websites: new builds, redesigns and rebuilds for NewtonX, Keller Williams Realty Consultants, the Institute of Reading Development, the World Food Travel Association, Website HQ and Arlene P., among others. Every one is listed on my Upwork profile.

More calls from people searching nearby

A page for each service and each town you serve, schema markup, and your Google Business Profile connected, so the site shows up when neighbors search.

A price you know before work starts

A written, fixed quote after a free consultation. Sites start at $2,500 and the number does not creep once we agree on it.

One person, start to finish

I design it, build it, write it and launch it. When you call with a question, you reach the person who made the last change.

Website design

From $2,500 one-time

A five-page site for a service business sits near that number. More pages, copywriting, booking or a store add to it. You get a written, fixed quote after a free consultation. No contract lock-in.

Lansing is a capital city, a college town and a ring of suburbs

Lansing had 112,644 people at the 2020 census, and the Lansing–East Lansing metro area has an estimated 473,000. It’s been Michigan’s capital since 1847. Most of the city is in Ingham County, but parts reach into Eaton and Clinton counties. Lansing is also the only state capital among the 48 in counties that isn’t a county seat. Ingham County’s seat is Mason.

For your customers, the lines that matter are simpler. They live in Lansing, East Lansing, Okemos, Holt, Grand Ledge or DeWitt, and they search whatever name comes to mind. A Lansing website that only says “Lansing” leaves the rest on the table, and a site that lists every suburb at the bottom of the page in one line doesn’t help either. It works better to name the towns you really serve, with something true to say about each.

Lansing website design for three different audiences

The local economy runs on state government, higher education, health care and insurance. Each brings a different searcher.

  • State workers and the people who do business with the state. Downtown is dominated by state government buildings, including the Capitol. Lobbyists, lawyers, consultants and contractors who work with state offices search for professional services, lunch and parking near Capitol Avenue. They want credentials, a clear list of services and a direct way to reach a person.
  • Michigan State University. MSU, in East Lansing, is the largest university in Michigan. Students, staff and visiting families search on a phone and follow the academic calendar. Lansing Community College adds more than 18,000 students at its main Lansing facilities.
  • Health care and insurance. University of Michigan Health-Sparrow Lansing is a 740-bed hospital with a Level I trauma center, and McLaren Greater Lansing is also in the city. Auto-Owners Insurance and Jackson National Life are headquartered in the area. That’s a large daytime workforce, with patients and families coming in from across Mid-Michigan.

Questions to settle before you hire a Lansing web designer

Should my website mention Old Town or REO Town?

If you’re there, yes. They’re Lansing’s best-known neighborhood districts, and people search them by name.

Old Town sits north of downtown, along the Grand River, with many buildings dating to the mid-1800s. It hosts the Old Town BluesFest, and people come for the neighborhood itself. REO Town is directly south of downtown, across I-496 along Washington Avenue. It’s where Ransom E. Olds built his factories, and it’s often called the birthplace of the American automobile.

So I put the district in your page title, your homepage’s first line, your contact page and your Google Business Profile, and keep it the same in all four places. “Coffee in REO Town” is a different search from “coffee in Lansing,” and your site should be able to answer both.

How should a Lansing site handle event weekends and the MSU calendar?

Plan for the weeks that change your traffic. The Common Ground Music Festival runs for a week every July at Adado Riverfront Park downtown, drawing crowds of more than 90,000 over the week. MSU move-in, home football games and graduation bring families who’ve never heard of you.

Those visitors decide on a phone, fast. I build the pages you’ll change often, like hours, menus and event specials, so you can update them yourself in a few minutes. Then I set up your Google Business Profile to match, because a visitor who sees one set of hours on Maps and another on your site trusts neither.

What do you need from me to start?

Your logo, your services and the towns you really serve. Photos of your work, your place and your team. Logins for your domain, hosting and current site, so email and anything else tied to the domain keeps working when the new site goes live. The questions customers ask you most, because they become pages. If you’d like, I write the copy, and you approve every page before launch. If you work with state offices, send me your certifications, contract vehicles or prequalifications, so they’re easy to find on the site. If you serve families or students, tell me which towns and campuses you really cover.

  • A homepage that says what you do and where, in the first line
  • A page for each service, plus pages for East Lansing or the suburbs where you do real work
  • Click-to-call and a short form that works on a phone
  • Your Google Business Profile matched to the site’s name, address, phone and hours
  • Fast pages, tested on a real phone with Google’s own tools before launch
  • Analytics, so you can see where calls and forms come from

I’m in Harrison Township, about two hours from Lansing by car, and the work runs by phone, video call and email. If you need ongoing ranking work after launch, see my Michigan SEO services. More on how a build runs is on my web design page. Send me your current site and the services you want more calls for, and I’ll tell you what I’d fix first.

How it works

How a website project runs, from the first call to launch

  1. 01

    Discovery

A short questionnaire, then a call about your customers, your competitors and what a good month looks like.

  2. 02

    Design

I design the homepage first. You approve the direction before I build the rest.

  3. 03

    Build and launch

Every page built and tested on real phones. Every old page redirected, so the rankings you have carry over.

  4. 04

    After launch

I stay around for questions and changes. If you want updates handled for you, that is my management plan.

Who you'd work with

The web designer and local SEO consultant you'll actually talk to

I'm Ryan York, and WebPossible is a one-person web design and SEO company in Harrison Township, Macomb County. I learned the work as a scuba diver in the Florida Keys, tired of waiting on the person who ran our website, which is why I think about the phone ringing first and the design second. There's no team to hand you off to. The person who answers your first call is the person who designs your website, builds it and checks your rankings.

I hired Ryan to help improve the SEO of my business website and he has been so easy to work with from the time I submitted my inquiry through the finishing touches. He is extremely responsive, organized in his approach, and thoughtful in his execution. I had many questions that I threw at Ryan, and he was able to answer them all, which made me feel really good about the entire process. Since the initial work started, I have added on more page updates because I am already seeing positive results. I look forward to continuing to work with Ryan and wouldn't hesitate to recommend him to other business owners that I know!

FAQ

Questions from Lansing business owners

My business is in Okemos. Should my website say Lansing or Okemos?

Use your real address everywhere, matching your Google Business Profile. Then say plainly in the copy that you serve Lansing and East Lansing, if you do, because people search all three names. Your town goes in the page title and the first line of the homepage.

Can you build a site that works for state agencies or contractors who bid on state work?

I build sites for small businesses, including the ones that sell to government. That means clear service pages, your certifications and capabilities in plain view, and a contact path a procurement officer can find fast.

How much does a website cost in Lansing?

My websites start at $2,500. A small site for one location sits near that number. More pages, booking, a store or copywriting raise it. You get a fixed written quote before I start.

Do you meet Lansing clients in person?

No. I'm in Harrison Township, about two hours from Lansing by car. Every project runs by phone, video call and email, and you review each page on a link before launch.

Will my site rank in East Lansing searches too?

In regular search results, it can, with copy and pages that cover the area honestly. In Google Maps, distance from the searcher matters, so a business in south Lansing won't show up first for someone near campus. I'll tell you where your reach is likely to stop.
