SEO for Ann Arbor businesses

Ann Arbor's searchers turn over every fall, and your competitors know their marketing. I help local businesses rank anyway, in Google and in Maps.

What you get

What local SEO should do for your business

You’re hiring someone who has done this for other businesses, not read about it. Thirteen SEO contracts on Upwork since 2016, from audits and setups for Eric W. and Nadia C. to ongoing work for Just Digital, Digital Concierge and Kenedy T., plus the local SEO I run for Captain Hook’s in the Florida Keys. The contracts are on my Upwork profile.

Show up where neighbors are looking

The map and the results under it for the searches that bring work: your service plus your town, or “near me.”

See what moved, every month

Rankings, Maps visibility, calls and form leads in one report, next to what I worked on and what is next.

Stop if it stops paying

Month to month, no lock-in. If the work is not paying for itself, you can end it.

Local SEO

From $2,000 per month

The price depends on how many locations and services you have, how much content you need, and how crowded your market is. You get a written, fixed quote after a free consultation. No contract lock-in.

Ann Arbor SEO starts with a market that resets every year

Ann Arbor is a university city first. The University of Michigan owns 22% of the land downtown, and its students, staff and patients make up a large share of the people searching for local businesses. A big part of that audience is new every year. Each fall, thousands of people arrive who have no favorite barber, dentist, coffee shop or mechanic yet. They pick one from Google.

That changes what ranking is worth here. In a town where everyone already knows everyone, a business can live on word of mouth. In Ann Arbor, the business at the top of Maps in late August and September gets first shot at a whole new set of regulars. The one on page two waits for referrals.

It also means the slow weeks are real. When classes end, part of your search traffic leaves with them. I report your numbers against the same month last year, not the month before, so a quiet June doesn’t look like something broke.

Ranking across Washtenaw County, not only inside the city limits

The Ann Arbor metro area, as the federal government defines it, is all of Washtenaw County. Your customers treat it that way too.

  • Ypsilanti. The built-up parts of Pittsfield and Ypsilanti townships make Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti effectively one urban area. Ypsilanti had 20,648 people in 2020 and is home to Eastern Michigan University, which brings its own student calendar, and the Depot Town district.
  • Saline and Dexter. Saline had 8,948 people in 2020. Dexter had 4,500 and sits about nine miles northwest of Ann Arbor. Both are smaller towns where people search by the town name, and where a business with real pages for them is competing with fewer businesses than it would downtown.
  • The commercial strips. Plenty of Ann Arbor businesses aren’t downtown at all. Briarwood Mall and the Ann Arbor-Saline Road area to the south, Washtenaw Avenue and Packard Road on the east side, Plymouth Road to the northeast and the Westgate and West Stadium area on the west side are all commercial areas people search by name.

In regular search results, a page for each area you serve can reach across the county. In Maps, distance still rules. So I start by mapping where your profile ranks now, then decide which areas are worth a page.

Questions to settle before you hire an Ann Arbor SEO company

How do I rank when my competitors already have good marketing?

Ann Arbor’s economy leans on technology, research and health care. Domino’s, Zingerman’s and Duo Security are all based in or near Ann Arbor, and a lot of local businesses have owners or customers who know what good marketing looks like. Assume the businesses you’re up against have decent websites.

So the gap gets closed on specifics. A page for each service, not one page listing all of them. Real photos and real answers to the questions your customers ask. A Google Business Profile with the right primary category, complete services, current hours and a steady flow of reviews. Listings that match everywhere. None of that is clever. I check which pieces your competitors have skipped and start there.

How does the medical center change searches for my business?

The university’s medical center is one of the largest employers in the region, and patients and families come in from well outside the city. Many of them stay nearby, eat nearby and need services nearby, and they search the way visitors do, on a phone and by distance from the hospital.

If you’re a practice, a pharmacy, a hotel, a restaurant or a service near the medical campus, your pages and your profile should say where you are relative to it, with parking and directions spelled out. Staff work shifts, too, so accurate hours matter more than usual. Someone looking for food at 11pm checks your hours on Maps before they get in the car.

What will I see in my report each month?

Maps rankings checked from points across Ann Arbor, Ypsilanti and the towns you serve, so you can see where your reach stops. Search rankings for the terms that bring you customers. Calls, direction requests and website visits from your profile. Form leads and bookings, compared with the same month last year so the school calendar doesn’t hide the trend. Then what I worked on, why, and what’s next. If something dropped, it’s in the report with my read on why. For businesses that lean on students, I also flag the weeks around move-in and graduation, so you can see whether the ranking work paid off when the new crowd arrived.

Local SEO for a city that walks

Tell me what your business does and where, and you get a written, fixed quote. No contract lock-in.

In 2019, 36% of trips in Ann Arbor were taken by walking, biking or transit. People who walk search “near me” constantly, and they search for what’s within a few blocks. That rewards businesses whose Google Business Profile is complete and whose website names the street, the district and the landmarks nearby.

If your website is the weak spot, my Ann Arbor web design page covers what I build, and my web design page covers how a project runs. For a profile that needs a one-time cleanup, see Google Business Profile optimization. The full monthly service is on my Michigan SEO page.

I’m in Harrison Township, about an hour and a half from Ann Arbor by car, and the work runs by phone, video call and email. Send me your website and the three searches you most want to win, and I’ll show you who ranks for them now and why.

Who you'd work with

The web designer and local SEO consultant you'll actually talk to

I'm Ryan York, and WebPossible is a one-person web design and SEO company in Harrison Township, Macomb County. I learned the work as a scuba diver in the Florida Keys, tired of waiting on the person who ran our website, which is why I think about the phone ringing first and the design second. There's no team to hand you off to. The person who answers your first call is the person who designs your website, builds it and checks your rankings.

I hired Ryan to help improve the SEO of my business website and he has been so easy to work with from the time I submitted my inquiry through the finishing touches. He is extremely responsive, organized in his approach, and thoughtful in his execution. I had many questions that I threw at Ryan, and he was able to answer them all, which made me feel really good about the entire process. Since the initial work started, I have added on more page updates because I am already seeing positive results. I look forward to continuing to work with Ryan and wouldn't hesitate to recommend him to other business owners that I know!

FAQ

Questions from Ann Arbor business owners

Can a business in Ypsilanti rank for Ann Arbor searches?

In regular search results, yes, with pages that cover Ann Arbor honestly. In Google Maps, distance from the searcher matters, so someone downtown will usually see closer businesses first. The two cities are close enough that a strong profile in Ypsilanti can still reach parts of Ann Arbor.

How much does SEO cost for an Ann Arbor business?

My local SEO starts at $2,000 a month. One location in one town sits near that number. Covering Ypsilanti, Saline, Dexter and the rest of Washtenaw County with more pages and content raises it. You get a fixed written quote, and it's month to month.

Why hire a one-person SEO company instead of an Ann Arbor agency?

You talk to the person doing the work, every time. You get a fixed quote, month-to-month terms and a report you can read. You own your site, your domain and your Google Business Profile, whoever you hire next.

Do you work with Ann Arbor businesses in person?

No. I'm in Harrison Township, about an hour and a half away by car, and the work runs by phone, video call and email. Nothing in local SEO needs me on site.
