SEO for Traverse City businesses

Traverse City customers are locals in January and visitors from downstate in July. I help your business show up for both, on Google and in Maps.

What you get

What local SEO should do for your business

You’re hiring someone who has done this for other businesses, not read about it. Thirteen SEO contracts on Upwork since 2016, from audits and setups for Eric W. and Nadia C. to ongoing work for Just Digital, Digital Concierge and Kenedy T., plus the local SEO I run for Captain Hook’s in the Florida Keys. The contracts are on my Upwork profile.

Show up where neighbors are looking

The map and the results under it for the searches that bring work: your service plus your town, or “near me.”

See what moved, every month

Rankings, Maps visibility, calls and form leads in one report, next to what I worked on and what is next.

Stop if it stops paying

Month to month, no lock-in. If the work is not paying for itself, you can end it.

Local SEO

From $2,000 per month

The price depends on how many locations and services you have, how much content you need, and how crowded your market is. You get a written, fixed quote after a free consultation. No contract lock-in.

Traverse City SEO has two audiences, and they search differently

Traverse City had 15,678 people at the 2020 census. The four-county metro area had 153,448, and it’s the largest city in Northern Michigan. In July the numbers change. The National Cherry Festival draws about 500,000 visitors a year, and summer tourism drives retail and restaurant sales across town.

Those two groups don’t search the same way.

  • Visitors plan from home. Someone in Detroit or Chicago searches “Traverse City wineries” or “fishing charter Grand Traverse Bay” before they pack. They read reviews, open three websites and book one. Your site has to rank in regular results for those searches, because Maps proximity doesn’t help when the searcher is hours away.
  • Visitors decide on the spot. Once they’re in town, the search becomes “breakfast near me” or “brewery open now.” That’s a Google Maps search, and your hours, photos and reviews decide it.
  • Locals search year-round. Hospitality employs about 14% of the Grand Traverse workforce. The rest of town still needs plumbers, dentists, accountants and roofers through a winter where snow can fall from November to April. Those customers search the way locals do anywhere, and they pick the business they trust.

A plan for your business starts by deciding which of these you depend on, then building for that first.

Where your business sits around the bay changes how you rank

Traverse City sits at the head of Grand Traverse Bay, where the 18-mile Old Mission Peninsula splits it into an East Arm and a West Arm. The Leelanau Peninsula separates the bay from Lake Michigan. Two wine regions recognized by the federal government, the Old Mission Peninsula and Leelanau Peninsula AVAs, sit right next to the city, and there are more than 50 wineries nearby.

Most of those wineries, orchards and inns have addresses outside the city limits. So do the stores and restaurants in Garfield Township, the city’s southwest neighbor and the largest municipality in Northern Michigan by population. Customers call all of it “Traverse City.” Google is more literal. It reads the address on your profile and compares it with your site and every directory listing.

That’s why I set up your pages to say both things clearly: the town or township on your address, and how far you are from downtown or Front Street. Visitors searching “Old Mission winery” and “Traverse City winery” should both find you.

Questions to settle before you hire a Traverse City SEO company

How do I keep Google right about my hours when they change every season?

Wrong hours cost you twice. A visitor drives out to a closed tasting room, then writes a review about it. Google Business Profile lets you set regular hours and separate special hours for holidays and one-off dates. Most seasonal businesses only change the regular hours, late, and the old ones keep showing on Apple Maps, Yelp and the rest.

Before each season turns, I update your hours on the profile, your website and the main directories at the same time, so every listing says the same thing. If you close for the winter, I mark it properly instead of letting the listing go quiet. Then the profile stays alive with winter posts and photos, so it isn’t starting cold in spring.

What can I do in the slow months that pays off in summer?

The winter is when the work gets done. Pages written in January have months to get indexed and picked up before visitors start searching. That means a page for each thing you sell, written for the person planning a trip: what the charter includes, what the tasting room offers, which rooms have a bay view, what’s walkable from Front Street.

It’s also when I fix the listings, chase the links from local tourism sites and event pages, and add answers to the questions visitors ask most. By the time the Cherry Festival crowd arrives, the groundwork has been in place for months.

What will I see in my report each month?

Maps rankings checked from points across town, the peninsulas and the township, so you can see where your reach stops. Search rankings for the trip-planning terms that matter to you. Calls, direction requests and website visits from your profile. Bookings or form leads, with last month and the same month last year beside them, because a February to July comparison tells you nothing in a tourist town. Then what I worked on, why, and what’s next. If a number went down, it’s in the report with my read on why, not buried. You can reply with questions and I’ll answer them on a call or by email.

Healthcare and year-round services in Traverse City

Munson Healthcare is headquartered in the city. It’s the largest employer north of U.S. Route 10 in Michigan, with more than 5,500 employees, and Traverse City is a medical referral hub for 29 counties. Patients and families drive in from across the north for appointments, and they search for clinics, pharmacies, lodging and food near the hospital like visitors do.

If you serve them, or you’re a trade or professional office serving locals, your Google ranking depends on service pages that answer real questions and a Google Business Profile that’s complete and current. If your site itself is holding you back, my Traverse City web design page covers what I’d change, and my web design page covers how a build runs. My Michigan SEO page covers how the monthly work runs.

I’m in Harrison Township, about five hours from Traverse City by car, and the work runs by phone, video call and email. Send me your website address and the searches you want to win, and I’ll tell you where you stand now.

Who you'd work with

The web designer and local SEO consultant you'll actually talk to

I'm Ryan York, and WebPossible is a one-person web design and SEO company in Harrison Township, Macomb County. I learned the work as a scuba diver in the Florida Keys, tired of waiting on the person who ran our website, which is why I think about the phone ringing first and the design second. There's no team to hand you off to. The person who answers your first call is the person who designs your website, builds it and checks your rankings.

I hired Ryan to help improve the SEO of my business website and he has been so easy to work with from the time I submitted my inquiry through the finishing touches. He is extremely responsive, organized in his approach, and thoughtful in his execution. I had many questions that I threw at Ryan, and he was able to answer them all, which made me feel really good about the entire process. Since the initial work started, I have added on more page updates because I am already seeing positive results. I look forward to continuing to work with Ryan and wouldn't hesitate to recommend him to other business owners that I know!

FAQ

Questions from Traverse City business owners

My winery is on the Old Mission Peninsula, not in the city. Can I still rank for Traverse City searches?

In regular search results, yes, if your site says plainly where you are and how close you are to town. In Google Maps, distance from the searcher matters, so a visitor standing downtown will see closer businesses first. Your profile has to be complete enough to beat them anyway, with the right category, current hours, photos and steady reviews.

Should I stop paying for SEO in the winter?

You can, because my work is month to month. I'd advise against it. Pages and links built in the slow months are what rank in June, and locals still search all winter. A pause in January usually means starting behind in May.

How much does SEO cost for a Traverse City business?

My local SEO starts at $2,000 a month. One location serving the city sits near that number. Covering the peninsulas, Garfield Township and nearby towns with more pages raises it. You get a fixed written quote, and there's no lock-in.

Do you work with Traverse City businesses in person?

No. I'm in Harrison Township, about five hours away by car, and the work runs by phone, video call and email. Nothing in local SEO needs me on your property.

Do summer visitors' reviews help my rankings?

Reviews help no matter where the customer lives. Visitors also read them closely, because they don't know your name. Ask every happy customer, in season and out, with a direct link I'll set up for you.
