Law firm SEO from a lawyer SEO expert

I help law firms show up when someone searches for a lawyer in their town, then turn that search into a call. I'm based in Macomb County and work with firms across Michigan.

What you get

What local SEO should do for your business

You’re hiring someone who has done this for other businesses, not read about it. Thirteen SEO contracts on Upwork since 2016, from audits and setups for Eric W. and Nadia C. to ongoing work for Just Digital, Digital Concierge and Kenedy T., plus the local SEO I run for Captain Hook’s in the Florida Keys. The contracts are on my Upwork profile.

Show up where neighbors are looking

The map and the results under it for the searches that bring work: your service plus your town, or “near me.”

See what moved, every month

Rankings, Maps visibility, calls and form leads in one report, next to what I worked on and what is next.

Stop if it stops paying

Month to month, no lock-in. If the work is not paying for itself, you can end it.

Local SEO

From $2,000 per month

The price depends on how many locations and services you have, how much content you need, and how crowded your market is. You get a written, fixed quote after a free consultation. No contract lock-in.

How people search for a lawyer

Legal searches sort into a few kinds, and each one needs a different page.

  • Urgent searches. “DUI lawyer near me,” “criminal defense attorney” after an arrest, “car accident lawyer” from a hospital waiting room. These happen on a phone, and the person calls one of the first firms they see in the map results.
  • Researched searches. Divorce, estate planning and bankruptcy clients read before they call. They search questions like “how long does a divorce take in Michigan” and compare two or three firms.
  • Name searches. Someone was referred to you and looks you up. If your profile has three reviews and a stock photo of a gavel, that referral can still go somewhere else.

Most small firm sites have one “Practice Areas” page with a bulleted list. That page can’t rank for six different kinds of cases. Each practice area you want calls for needs its own page that answers the questions those clients ask.

What to settle before you hire a law firm SEO company

Which Google Business Profile choices matter most for a firm?

For “lawyer near me” searches, the map results sit above the regular results, and the map results come from Google Business Profiles. Three choices matter most. The primary category: Google has specific ones like Personal injury attorney, Criminal justice attorney, Family law attorney and Estate planning attorney, and a firm listed as plain “Attorney” or “Law firm” gives up a lot of searches, so pick the primary category for the work you most want and add secondary categories for the rest. One profile per real office: Google’s rules allow a profile at an address where you actually see clients during posted hours, and a virtual office or a mail drop can get a profile suspended. And whether each attorney gets a profile: Google lets individual practitioners have their own listings, which can help or split your reviews, so decide on purpose. My Google Business Profile optimization is $400 one time if that’s all you need.

How do I get reviews without a confidentiality problem?

Clients who were happy with a divorce or a criminal case often don’t want their name on a public review. Ask anyway, by text, right after a good outcome, and make it easy. Some will say yes.

Be careful when you answer reviews, especially bad ones. A reply that confirms details of someone’s case can create problems with client confidentiality. The safe reply is short, polite and says nothing about the matter. I write reply templates your staff can use, so nobody improvises on a bad day.

Will my website break the advertising rules?

Your website and your Google profile count as communications about your services, so your state’s lawyer advertising rules cover them. In Michigan that’s Rules 7.1 through 7.3 of the Michigan Rules of Professional Conduct. Among other things, Rule 7.1 bars communications that are false or misleading or likely to create an unjustified expectation about results.

In practice that affects a lot of standard marketing copy. Words like “specialist” or “expert” about your own practice, lists of past verdicts, and client testimonials all deserve a second look. I’m not a lawyer and this isn’t legal advice. I write copy that avoids the obvious problems, flag anything that needs your judgment, and you make the call before it goes live.

What will I see each month?

Maps and search rankings for the practice-area searches we agreed matter, in the county or counties you take cases in. Calls from the profile and the site, and form fills, with the previous month beside them. Under that, what I worked on and why, and what’s next. If a page is waiting on your review, the report says so, because a practice-area page that sits in draft for two months isn’t ranking for anyone.

What do you need from me?

Manager access to your Google Business Profile. The practice areas you want more of, and the ones you’d rather not take. The courts and counties where you actually appear, because I build pages for those only if you do. Photos of the office and the attorneys, not a gavel. A short review of each page before it goes live, since only you can say whether something is accurate and allowed. And a staff member who will send the review text after a good outcome.

Near a courthouse

Firms near a courthouse have a local advantage. Clients driving in for a hearing search for an attorney close to the building, and a profile and site that say exactly where you are catch them. My Mount Clemens SEO page explains how that plays out near the Macomb County Circuit Court.

Who you'd work with

The web designer and local SEO consultant you'll actually talk to

I'm Ryan York, and WebPossible is a one-person web design and SEO company in Harrison Township, Macomb County. I learned the work as a scuba diver in the Florida Keys, tired of waiting on the person who ran our website, which is why I think about the phone ringing first and the design second. There's no team to hand you off to. The person who answers your first call is the person who designs your website, builds it and checks your rankings.

I hired Ryan to help improve the SEO of my business website and he has been so easy to work with from the time I submitted my inquiry through the finishing touches. He is extremely responsive, organized in his approach, and thoughtful in his execution. I had many questions that I threw at Ryan, and he was able to answer them all, which made me feel really good about the entire process. Since the initial work started, I have added on more page updates because I am already seeing positive results. I look forward to continuing to work with Ryan and wouldn't hesitate to recommend him to other business owners that I know!

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about local SEO services and pricing

What makes someone a lawyer SEO expert?

Ask to see the work. A person who knows legal SEO can explain how they'd structure your practice-area pages, which Google Business Profile category they'd pick for you and why, and how they'd handle reviews without breaking your advertising rules. If the pitch is mostly guarantees and rankings screenshots, keep looking.

Can you guarantee my firm a top spot on Google?

No, and you should be wary of anyone who does. Google doesn't sell organic rankings. I can tell you what I'll do each month, show you what moved in a monthly report, and stop if it isn't paying off. SEO is month to month.

Should a solo attorney and a 20-lawyer firm do SEO the same way?

The basics match, but the plan doesn't. A solo practice usually wins by owning one or two practice areas in one county. A larger firm needs a page for each practice area and each office, and a profile for each location that has staff.

Do you write the practice-area pages?

Yes, and you review every page before it goes live. You know the law. I know how people search for it. A page needs both, and only you can say whether something is accurate and allowed.

How much does law firm SEO cost?

My local SEO starts at $2,000 a month. A one-time Google Business Profile cleanup is $400. If your website needs a rebuild first, that starts at $2,500, and my lawyers website cost guide explains what drives that number.
