Why most small business blog posts bring in nothing

A lot of small business blogs are full of posts like “5 Tips for Spring” that nobody searched for. They take time to write, they don’t rank, and they don’t bring in calls. I write the other kind: articles built around what your customers type into Google before they hire someone like you.

For a roofer, that might be “how long does a roof replacement take” or “roof repair vs. replacement.” For a law firm, “what happens at a first DUI hearing in Michigan.” For a restaurant, it might be a page that answers what people search the week before they book a party. The person reading has a real question, and a good answer puts your business in front of them at the moment they’re deciding.

What’s included in every article I write

  • A topic chosen around a real search, with the main search written into the title and headings
  • A title tag and meta description written for the search results page
  • Links to your own service and location pages
  • Links out to solid sources where a fact needs backing
  • Your review and my revisions before anything goes live

Website content that sounds like your business, not a content mill

I write in your voice. If you’re blunt, the article is blunt. If you’re a therapist, it’s careful and warm. You’ll also never see me pad an article to hit a word count. An article should be as long as it takes to answer the question, and some answers are short.

I keep the facts honest too. I won’t make up statistics, customer stories or results. If an article needs a number, I find a real source or ask you for it.

I write for my own sites as well. Experience Boat Town, a Lake St. Clair boating guide I built from scratch, picked up 47,550 Google search impressions in its first 11 weeks (Google Search Console, Aug 20 to Nov 5, 2026).

Questions to settle before you order blog or website content

Will an article bring in calls, or only visitors?

It depends on the search it’s written for. “How long does a roof replacement take” is typed by someone who is about to hire a roofer, and an article that answers it plainly, with a link to your roof replacement page and your phone number, gets calls. “History of roofing materials” gets visitors who will never hire anyone. The difference is the search I pick with you before writing a word, not the writing itself.

The article also needs somewhere to send the reader. If the service page it links to is thin or slow, the reader bounces there instead. That’s why I look at your service pages first and sometimes tell you to buy one of those before any blog post.

What do you need from me for an article?

Twenty minutes, by email or on a call, to answer a short list of questions about the topic: what customers ask you, what goes wrong, what things cost, what you’d tell a friend. Your answers are where the useful detail comes from, and they’re what makes the article sound like you instead of like every other page on the subject. If you have Google Search Console, access to it, so I can see what your site already ranks for and pick a topic that builds on it rather than starting cold. A few local details for local topics: the town names people actually use, the weather your customers deal with, the county or state rules that apply. I’ll ask instead of guessing. Then an hour or so to read the draft and send corrections. Anything a person in your trade would get wrong, I want to hear about before it publishes.

What happens after the article publishes?

You post it, or I do if I manage your site. Google usually takes a few weeks to settle on where a new page ranks, and Search Console shows which searches it’s appearing for and how often it’s clicked. That’s what I use to decide what to write next: a search where the article is already showing on page two is a better target than a brand-new topic, because a second article or a revision can push it onto page one.

The article is yours once it’s paid for. Put it in a newsletter, cut it up for social media, quote it in a proposal. If a fact changes later, like a price or a rule, send me a note and I’ll update it as a small edit, which is covered if you’re on the management plan.

Articles help most when the site under them is in good shape. If your pages are slow or your services aren’t clearly listed, fix that first, because the articles will send readers to those pages. My web design and local SEO work handle that side. If your site is on WordPress and you’d like me to publish articles and keep everything updated, that’s my website management plan.

Tell me what your customers ask you most, and I’ll tell you which search to write for first.

How it works

How I research and write an article for your site

  1. 01

    Pick the search

I look at what people search in your field and what your site already ranks for in Search Console, if you have it. We agree on the topic and the main search before I write a word.

  2. 02

    Read what ranks

I read the pages Google already shows for that search, so the article covers what they cover and adds what they miss.

  3. 03

    Ask you

A short list of questions by email or a quick call. Your answers are where the useful detail comes from: what customers ask, what goes wrong, what things cost.

  4. 04

    Write

Plain language, short paragraphs, headings that match the questions people ask, and links to your service pages so a reader can call or book.

  5. 05

    Review

You read it and send corrections. I revise until it’s right.

  6. 06

    Publish

You post it, or I do if I manage your site.

Why me

What most content writing services deliver, and what I deliver

Elsewhere, often

  • Topics picked because they sound good
  • Generic text that could be about any company
  • No link to the page where a reader can call you
  • Written without asking what your customers ask you

With me

  • Topics picked from searches your customers make
  • Detail from your own answers, in your voice
  • Links to your service pages in every article
  • The topic checked against what your site already ranks for

Who you'd work with

The web designer and local SEO consultant you'll actually talk to

I'm Ryan York, and WebPossible is a one-person web design and SEO company in Harrison Township, Macomb County. I learned the work as a scuba diver in the Florida Keys, tired of waiting on the person who ran our website, which is why I think about the phone ringing first and the design second. There's no team to hand you off to. The person who answers your first call is the person who designs your website, builds it and checks your rankings.

I hired Ryan to help improve the SEO of my business website and he has been so easy to work with from the time I submitted my inquiry through the finishing touches. He is extremely responsive, organized in his approach, and thoughtful in his execution. I had many questions that I threw at Ryan, and he was able to answer them all, which made me feel really good about the entire process. Since the initial work started, I have added on more page updates because I am already seeing positive results. I look forward to continuing to work with Ryan and wouldn't hesitate to recommend him to other business owners that I know!

Working with Ryan York at WebPossible made redesigning our website a great experience. Our acupuncture practice recently needed to update our website, and I wanted to find someone we could communicate with and who would be able to produce quick, professional results within our small budget. And just as importantly, I wanted that person to be able to understand the what we are about so that the website could project that to potential patients. We found the right web designer! Ryan is clear, precise and professional. It amazes me how quickly he was able to create a new website for us and respond to any changes we wanted. And all this without having any face-to-face meetings, and for a great price! We are really happy, and I recommend this company wholeheartedly.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about blog and website content writing

What do I get for $150?

One article, researched and written around a search your customers actually make, with a title, meta description, headings and links to the right pages on your site. You review it, I revise it, and it's yours to publish. If you're on my management plan or SEO service, I can publish it for you.

Do you write about my industry if you've never worked in it?

Yes. You know the trade and I know how people search for it. I'll ask you questions, read what already ranks, and send you the draft to check for anything a person in your business would get wrong. Your corrections go in before it publishes.

Who owns the articles?

You do, once they're paid for. Publish them on your site, put them in a newsletter, cut them up for social media. They're yours.

Can you write service pages and town pages too?

Yes. Service pages and pages for the towns you serve often bring in more calls than blog posts do, because the person searching is ready to hire. I'll tell you which to write first.

How many articles should I buy?

Fewer than you think, at first. A handful of articles aimed at the right searches does more than a weekly post nobody looks for. I'd start with three to five, see what Search Console shows, and decide from there.
