What you get

What a new website should do for your business

Your site won’t be my first. Since 2016 I’ve delivered 154 Upwork jobs for more than 100 clients, and 94 of them were WordPress and Divi websites: new builds, redesigns and rebuilds for NewtonX, Keller Williams Realty Consultants, the Institute of Reading Development, the World Food Travel Association, Website HQ and Arlene P., among others. Every one is listed on my Upwork profile.

More calls from people searching nearby

A page for each service and each town you serve, schema markup, and your Google Business Profile connected, so the site shows up when neighbors search.

A price you know before work starts

A written, fixed quote after a free consultation. Sites start at $2,500 and the number does not creep once we agree on it.

One person, start to finish

I design it, build it, write it and launch it. When you call with a question, you reach the person who made the last change.

Website design

From $2,500 one-time

A five-page site for a service business sits near that number. More pages, copywriting, booking or a store add to it. You get a written, fixed quote after a free consultation. No contract lock-in.

Who’s searching in Grand Rapids, and what they want to see

Grand Rapids had 198,917 people at the 2020 census. That makes it the second-largest city in Michigan, behind Detroit, and the county seat of Kent County, and the metro area had about 1.09 million people. A market that size has real competition for local searches. A plumber, a dentist or a law firm here is rarely the only one showing up in Google Maps.

The local economy is broad. Corewell Health, Meijer and Steelcase are all major regional names, and health care, manufacturing and consumer goods all employ a lot of people here. The furniture industry earned Grand Rapids the nickname “Furniture City,” and it’s still a presence in the area. For a small business, that mix means your customers range from hospital staff on shift schedules to manufacturing workers to young professionals downtown. They all search on their phones, and most of them pick from the top few results.

What they want to see depends on what you sell:

  • Restaurants, bars and venues downtown and in Heartside. Evening and event traffic that decides on a phone. Hours, menu and a directions link, one tap away.
  • Practices near the Medical Mile. Patients who search by specialty, insurance and distance, and who often don’t know the city.
  • Contractors and home services. Homeowners across the metro who want to know whether you’ll come to their suburb, and who leave if the site is slow.

Three things about Grand Rapids that change how I build

Should my site name the neighborhoods people search?

Grand Rapids is a city of named neighborhoods, and people search by them. The city’s official list includes Heartside, Eastown, East Hills and Downtown, among many others. If your business is in one of them, your website and Google Business Profile should say so plainly. “Coffee shop in Eastown” is a search people make, and a site that only says “Grand Rapids” has given Google no way to match it.

So I put the neighborhood in the first line of the homepage, in the page title, on the contact page and in the profile, and I keep it the same in all four places. Where you serve more than one, each gets its own short page with what you do there, instead of a list of names at the bottom of the homepage that nobody reads and Google ignores.

How does the Medical Mile change who searches for you?

The medical district grew up around the Van Andel Institute, a biomedical research facility that opened in 2000. Clinics, practices and the businesses that serve their staff and patients compete for searches from people who are often new to the area or visiting for appointments. Corewell Health is one of the region’s biggest names, and hospital staff work shift schedules that don’t match a nine-to-five business.

For a practice, that means the site has to answer the first three questions fast: what you treat, whether you take the patient’s insurance, and how to book. For a restaurant, shop or service near the district, it means hours that are current and a location explained relative to the hospital and the parking, because the person searching has never been on your street.

How do ArtPrize and brewery weekends change who finds you?

Grand Rapids runs big events that bring in visitors who don’t know local businesses yet. ArtPrize is an international art competition held in the city. The craft brewing scene is big enough that Grand Rapids won the “Beer City USA” title outright in 2013. Breweries, restaurants and shops that want visitor traffic need their hours, menus and directions current on both the site and the Maps listing, especially ahead of big weekends.

I build so those details are quick to change, by you or by me, and I set up the Google Business Profile to match the site. A listing that shows one set of hours while the site shows another costs you the walk-in who checked.

  • A homepage that says what you do and where, in the first line
  • A page for each service, plus pages for the neighborhoods or suburbs you actually serve, including Wyoming, one of the region’s fast-growing suburbs, if you work there
  • Click-to-call and a short quote or booking form that works on a phone
  • Your Google Business Profile matched to the site’s name, address, phone number and services
  • Fast pages, tested with Google’s own tools before launch
  • Analytics so you can see where leads come from

People searching “website design west Michigan” usually mean this market: Grand Rapids and the towns around it, out to Holland and Muskegon on the lakeshore, and down to Kalamazoo. The same build applies across all of it. I’m in Harrison Township, on Lake St. Clair, roughly three hours and 15 minutes from Grand Rapids by car, and the work runs by phone, video call and email. Because I’m not on the ground, I do the homework before I write a word: who ranks for your services in Grand Rapids, what their sites do well, and where they’re weak.

If you’re a contractor, read my page on lead generation websites for contractors. If you need ongoing rankings work, see my Michigan SEO services.

How it works

How a website project runs, from the first call to launch

  1. 01

    Discovery

A short questionnaire, then a call about your customers, your competitors and what a good month looks like.

  2. 02

    Design

I design the homepage first. You approve the direction before I build the rest.

  3. 03

    Build and launch

Every page built and tested on real phones. Every old page redirected, so the rankings you have carry over.

  4. 04

    After launch

I stay around for questions and changes. If you want updates handled for you, that is my management plan.

Who you'd work with

The web designer and local SEO consultant you'll actually talk to

I'm Ryan York, and WebPossible is a one-person web design and SEO company in Harrison Township, Macomb County. I learned the work as a scuba diver in the Florida Keys, tired of waiting on the person who ran our website, which is why I think about the phone ringing first and the design second. There's no team to hand you off to. The person who answers your first call is the person who designs your website, builds it and checks your rankings.

I hired Ryan to help improve the SEO of my business website and he has been so easy to work with from the time I submitted my inquiry through the finishing touches. He is extremely responsive, organized in his approach, and thoughtful in his execution. I had many questions that I threw at Ryan, and he was able to answer them all, which made me feel really good about the entire process. Since the initial work started, I have added on more page updates because I am already seeing positive results. I look forward to continuing to work with Ryan and wouldn't hesitate to recommend him to other business owners that I know!

FAQ

Questions from Grand Rapids business owners

You're not in Grand Rapids. How does that work?

Everything runs by phone, video call and email, which is how I work with every client, including the ones 15 minutes from my office. I'm about three hours east of Grand Rapids by car. You won't see me in person, but you'll always reach me directly.

Why not hire a Grand Rapids agency?

You might want to, and there are good ones. Hire me if you'd rather deal with one person who does the work, pay a fixed price you see up front, and stay month to month on anything ongoing. If you need someone in your office every week, I'm the wrong fit.

Can you help me rank in Wyoming and the other Kent County suburbs too?

Yes, if you serve those areas. I'll build pages around the services you offer and the cities you actually work in, and set up your Google Business Profile's service area to match.

How much does a website cost for a Grand Rapids small business?

My sites start at $2,500. A five-page service business site sits near that. More pages, copywriting, booking or a store add to it. You get a fixed written quote before I start.
